Group vs. Private HypnoBirthing: Which Is Right for You?
If you’re considering HypnoBirthing, you may have noticed there are a few different ways to do it.
You might be wondering:
Should I join a group, or would private sessions be better for me?
The truth is, neither is automatically better. They offer different kinds of support, and the right choice depends on what you’re looking for from your birth preparation.
Here’s how I think about the difference.
What do you actually want from HypnoBirthing?
At its core, HypnoBirthing is about learning how to work with your mind, body, and nervous system as you prepare for birth.
You’ll learn tools for relaxation, breathing, visualization, mindset, and staying grounded when things feel uncertain or intense.
But how you learn those tools can look different depending on whether you choose a group or private experience.
Group HypnoBirthing
A group program can be a really beautiful way to prepare for birth because you’re not doing it alone.
You’re learning alongside other expecting parents who are also thinking about birth, asking questions, and preparing for a major transition in their lives.
My group HypnoBirthing program is a 6-week experience with 60-minute sessions, where we move through the core tools and practices together.
Group may be a good fit for you if you:
Want the connection and community of learning with other expecting parents
Like having a clear structure and a set program to follow
Want accountability to actually practice the tools
Enjoy hearing other people's questions and experiences
Want to feel like you're preparing for birth alongside others
Want a more affordable option than private support
And there’s something valuable about realizing, “Oh, I’m not the only one thinking about this.”
Birth can bring up a lot of thoughts and emotions. Having a space where you can learn, ask questions, and connect with other people going through something similar can be incredibly grounding.
Private HypnoBirthing
Private HypnoBirthing gives us the ability to make the experience much more personal to you.
Instead of following the same path as a group, we can slow down, go deeper, or spend more time on the areas that matter most to you.
Maybe you have a specific fear around birth.
Maybe you had a difficult previous birth.
Maybe you feel completely fine about birth but want to prepare your nervous system as intentionally as possible.
Maybe you want your partner to have a bigger role in the preparation.
Or maybe you simply know that you do your best work when you have someone's full attention.
Private support can be especially helpful when you want to explore your specific relationship with birth, rather than simply learning a set of techniques.
So… which one should you choose?
I would think about it less as:
“Which one is better?”
and more as:
“What kind of support do I want?”
If you're looking for community, structure, and a shared experience, the group may be exactly what you're looking for.
If you're looking for personalization, flexibility, and deeper individual support, private sessions may be the better fit.
And you don't have to be afraid that choosing a group means you're getting a less valuable experience.
The goal isn't to give you the most expensive option.
The goal is to help you feel prepared, supported, and connected to yourself as you approach birth.
What if I don't know what I need yet?
That's okay.
You don't have to know exactly what kind of birth preparation you need before you start.
Sometimes you don't realize what you want to work on until you have a conversation about it.
If you're unsure, we can talk through where you're at, what you're hoping to get from HypnoBirthing, and which option makes the most sense for you.
Ready to prepare for birth in a way that feels right for you?
I offer both small-group and private HypnoBirthing support in Denver and online.
My next group begins September 16 and includes six 90-minute sessions designed to give you practical tools, space to practice, and the support of learning alongside other expecting parents.
If you know you want a more individualized experience, private HypnoBirthing gives us the space to tailor the work specifically to you and your birth.
There isn't one right way to prepare for birth.
There’s the way that feels right for you.

HypnoBirthing is a form of birth preparation that combines deep relaxation, breathing, visualization, mindset work, and subconscious conditioning. The goal isn't to control your birth. It's to help you feel more connected to your body, more confident in your ability to handle sensations and uncertainty, and more prepared for whatever your birth looks like.
-
No. This is one of the biggest misconceptions about HypnoBirthing. You can use HypnoBirthing whether you're planning an unmedicated birth, considering an epidural, planning an induction, or having a scheduled C-section. These tools aren't dependent on one particular birth outcome. They're tools for staying grounded, informed, and connected throughout the experience.
-
Yes. In fact, fear of birth is one of the reasons many people seek out HypnoBirthing. Rather than simply telling yourself not to be afraid, we can explore what's underneath the fear and help your nervous system experience birth as something you can approach rather than something you have to brace against.
-
There isn't one perfect time. Many people start in the second or early third trimester so they have time to learn and practice the tools before birth. That said, it's never too late to begin. Even if you're further along in pregnancy, we can focus on the tools that will be most useful to you now.
-
It depends on whether you're working in a group or privately, but sessions typically combine education, discussion, relaxation, breathing, visualization, and hypnosis. Private sessions can also be shaped around your specific fears, experiences, preferences, and goals rather than following a set path.
-
Not at all. You don't need to know how to meditate, clear your mind, or visualize perfectly. HypnoBirthing isn't about doing something “right.” We work with the way your mind naturally works and find techniques that feel accessible to you.
-
Not exactly. - traditional childbirth education often focuses heavily on what happens during labor, medical interventions, procedures, and what to expect at the hospital. HypnoBirthing places more emphasis on your internal experience; your nervous system, thoughts, emotions, relaxation, breathing, and relationship with the sensations of birth. They can complement each other really well.
-
No, but partners can be an important part of the process. They can learn how to support your relaxation, help you use your tools, and understand what helps you feel safe and grounded. In my private program, we also have a dedicated partner component so they have a more active role in your preparation.
-
You don't have to simply “think positively” about your next birth. If you have a difficult birth experience behind you, we can make space for what happened and explore what you want to feel different this time. Private sessions can be particularly helpful when your previous experience is an important part of what you're bringing into this pregnancy.
-
Absolutely. HypnoBirthing can still give you tools for relaxation, managing anxiety, communicating your needs, and staying grounded before and during medical procedures. Your birth doesn't have to follow a particular plan for these skills to be useful.
-
It depends on the kind of support you're looking for. A group program can be a great fit if you want structure, community, and the experience of preparing alongside other expecting parents. Private sessions are a better fit if you want the experience tailored specifically to you, more flexibility, or deeper work around particular fears or experiences.
-
You don't have to know before you schedule a consultation. We can talk about what you're hoping to get from HypnoBirthing, what's coming up for you around birth, and what kind of support would feel most useful. There isn't a “better” option, there's the option that fits you best.
-
No. It can be helpful whether this is your first birth or your fifth. In fact, someone who has given birth before may have very specific experiences, expectations, or fears that they want to approach differently this time.
-
This is one of the reasons I don't view HypnoBirthing as a way to guarantee a particular birth. Birth involves another human being, your body, and circumstances that you can't completely control. The goal is to build flexibility alongside preparation; so you have tools you can continue using even when things change.
-
I don't believe birth preparation should be about convincing yourself that everything will go exactly according to plan. My approach is about helping you build trust in yourself, learn how to regulate your nervous system, understand your fears, and develop tools you can actually use. Whether you're preparing for an unmedicated birth, an epidural, a C-section, or simply don't know what your birth will look like yet, the goal is the same: to help you feel more prepared and more connected to yourself.
Ready to explore HypnoBirthing?
My next 6-week group HypnoBirthing program begins September 16, or you can work with me privately for a more individualized experience.
You don't need to have your entire birth plan figured out before you start. You just need to be willing to prepare.
